Pupil Premium and Catch Up Funding

PUPIL PREMIUM FUNDING

Pupil Premium funding is a National Government initiative to support disadvantaged pupils. Research shows that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds often face extra challenges that may prevent them from reaching their full potential in school. It is proven that a pupil premium child may not achieve in line with their peers. Pupil Premium funding is intended to support schools, in addition to their main budget to improve levels of achievement for all disadvantaged pupils and to close the gap between disadvantaged children and their peers.

Pupil Premium Funding is allocated to children who meet certain criteria:

  • If they are looked after by the Local Authority
  • If they have been eligible for Free School Meals at any point in the last six years (also known as Ever 6 FSM)
  • If their parents are currently serving in the armed forces

As a mainstream school, Grove Primary School and Nursery will receive a proportion of the school budget as funding for Pupil Premium children.  This is based on an allocation of £1,900 per looked after child, £1,320 per child who has been eligible for free school meals in the last 6 years and £300 for a child with a parent serving in the armed forces. Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium funding as they see fit. Therefore, at Grove Primary School and Nursery  it is expected that the funding will be used to support children who fall into this group so that they have every opportunity to make the same progress as their peers. The funding is also used to ensure that children can access a wide range of meaningful, purposeful opportunities to support our bespoke curriculum.

To ensure that our Pupil Premium funding is targeted in the most effective way, we track the attainment and progress of Pupil Premium  children. This forms a regular part of the review process within school. We compare the progress of children eligible for Pupil Premium funding against their peers in school and nationally. We collect further evidence through monitoring activities such as lesson visits, pupil voice and by regularly looking at the progress shown in classroom activities.  By doing this we can judge the impact of our work and the level of success that our strategy is having on Pupil Premium children.

Barriers Faced by Eligible Children

At Grove Primary School and Nursery,  we use the Pupil Premium funding to support children with a range of different needs. To ensure that the funding in a way that provides best value for money, we refer to the Education Endowment Foundation's Teaching and Learning Toolkit that provides detailed research into activities that have the most impact on Pupil Progress.

Leaders ensure that the spending is linked closely to the School Development Plan. Currently our School Development plan has a specific focus on Speech and Language. Mrs Somers, a trained speech and language provides ongoing staff training. As well as this, Mrs Somers works with individual and small groups of children in order to support early language acquistion.

Other areas of spending will include:

  • Guidance from other agencies and support strategies for individual and groups of children
  • The development of the role of the EWO to ensure that the attendance of children eligible for Pupil Premium funding is consistent with whole school targets attedance targets
  • Pupil Premium children will have their needs clearly identified and the progress closely monitored throughout the school.
  • Ensuring that Teachers and support staff are trained in running effective interventions in order to meet need
  • 1:1 daily reading for all identified children needing support
  • Ensuring that more able Pupil Premium children are challenged and encouraged to develop a love of learning and an appreciation of their local community.
  • Supporting the Authentic Experiences curriclum driver to provide Pupil Premium children with inspirational learning opportunities

How the Impact will be Measured

The impact of the funding will be measured by the attainment and progress of the children who are entitled to Pupil Premium funding throughout the termly and yearly data capture cycle. Progress meetings will be held to ensure that future planning addresses gaps in learning. Areas of success are shared with other staff to develop consistent practice.

We engage with all groups of pupils as they are at the heart of everything we do. Children show us the progress they have made and talk about things they have found difficult. This feedback is used to review and adapt our provision for Pupil Premium children.
