PE Curriculum Intent
Curriculum Intent
The PE curriculum promotes curiosity and a love and thirst for learning. It is ambitious and empowers our children to become independent and resilient and reach their full potential – like all curriculum areas.
We want to equip our pupils with not only the minimum statutory requirements of the physical education National Curriculum but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. For example, in the summer term, some Year 3 and Year 4 children visited the Worcester Warriors Stadium. This was part of our quest to subject our pupils to as many different sporting disciplines as possible. Children were shown around the club, ran down the tunnel and played tag-rugby on the main Sixways pitch.
To further demonstrate our commitment to providing broader experiences of a range of sports and activities we offered 'glow-in-the-dark dodgeball' in the autumn term – something we have never offered in our school before. The day was thoroughly enjoyed and the children were fascinated by the specialist lights that were provided to introduce them to the discipline. We also have enrichment days that introduce the children to sports and activities that they wouldn’t normally have access to. For example, during Spring 2020 the children enjoyed VX, Karate and Street Dance.
We want our pupils to use the sporting culture of our great county to learn about their health and well-being, respect diversity, co-operate with one another and appreciate what they have. We achieve this by providing a strong SMSC curriculum, with British Values and our school values placed at the heart of everything we do. This often feeds into the PE curriculum. For example, our pupils are often discussing how important it is to help and look after others, so the children raised £300 for the British Heart Foundation by jumping or skipping in a variety of ways.
We enrich their time in our school with memorable, unforgettable experiences and provide opportunities which are normally out of reach – this piques their interests and passions. For example, we participate in The Chase High School cluster which provides the pupils with the opportunity to participate in a range of activities. We firmly believe that it is not just about what happens in the classroom, it is about the added value we offer to really inspire our children.
